A New Perspective from Victoria Tower
March 20, 2025My final year project ‘Always’ (working title) has Huddersfield at its core, symbolised by Castle Hill. Within this project, Castle Hill represents a place that is revisited, symbolising how loved ones who are no longer with us continue to watch over us. I have taken many photographs up at Castle Hill, of the surrounding landscapes and Victoria Tower itself. I felt that it would be interesting to get a different perspective, and got in touch with the rangers regarding gaining access to Victoria Tower. After a few emails back and forth I got a confirmed date for access! At first, I was slightly hesitant to email as I wasn’t sure that emailing would make access possible, but I was very happy that I tried and it was a possibility.
Before this shoot I tried to prepare but as I did not know what the lighting situation within the tower would be like this was quite hard. I prepared as best I could and took a speedlight with me so that I had some sort of lighting equipment in case it was really dark. I also took my 35mm lens with a low aperture of f 1.8.
On the day of the shoot, I got extremely lucky with the weather! The sun shone through the tower’s windows, creating beautiful natural light and shadows. I used my 35mm lens but I didn’t need to use the speedlight because of the natural light that was flooding in. I took photographs around the inside of the tower and was also able to take pictures of the view from the top. I took multiple photographs of the view and stitched these together in Photoshop using the photo merge tool. Below you can see the three images I used and the resulting panoramic.
Overall I was very happy with the photographs that I took within this shoot and was so happy with the natural lighting, which I made sure to utilise within this shoot. I feel that these collections of images add a really nice alternative perspective to my project.
