Portfolio Review Insights
March 25, 2025For this portfolio review, I spoke to two industry professionals- Tom Duffield and Roz Doherty. I had the choice of four people, and I picked these two as I felt they would be best to look at my work as their own practice is most similar to my own.
When we previously discussed these portfolio reviews in a lecture, we were told to take one type of work: a book, prints or digital images. This is so we can get as much in-depth feedback on one thing as possible, as each slot was 15 minutes which is not a particularly long time. We were also told to have some questions prepared so we could lead the portfolio review and get opinions on the areas we felt we needed the most.
For my portfolio review, I felt that the best thing for me to take was a dummy book as this is what I want the end product of my project to be. I created a dummy book with some text alongside the images. I decided that the things I wanted to gain opinions on were the sequencing, how well the text works and the overall feel of the book.
As well as gaining feedback from Tom and Roz, I also spoke to two of my lecturers, David and Yan, so I could get as much feedback as possible. I found it quite interesting to hear different opinions about my work, but it was also interesting to see which bits of feedback consistently came up. A consistent opinion with each person was that the size of the book works nicely. This was something that I wanted to get feedback on as I have been trialling different sizes. They all felt that the sequencing needed some slight adjustments, but that was nearly there.
However, one thing that consistently came up was about the text. The use of text within the book had mixed opinions, with some people saying to change it or remove it and others saying to keep some of the text. This indicated to me that this is an area I need to focus on, so I am going to try working on the text further to see if adjusting it slightly will help it to accompany the images better. I am also going to try the book without text completely to see whether it necessarily adds to my work or whether it would work better without it.
This portfolio review was very useful to get feedback from people with no relation to the work, but also, the preparation for the portfolio review was very useful. It made me think about what I wanted them to see and what I wanted to gain opinions on about my work.
