Projecting Grief: Can Grief be a Catalyst for Creativity?

Whilst at the PhotoNorth Festival, I found a project called Projecting Grief, which is a project that consists of photographs and interviews with various people, looking at the relationship between grief and creativity. It shows different people’s journeys and how their creative hobby has helped to give them comfort. At the festival, looking at different people’s stories moved me. I found it interesting to see how all of these different people had used their creativity in different ways to help them manage their grief.

I found the display method of this project very interesting, as it was printed onto thick corrugated card and slotted together like a structure. This meant that to see all of the images, you had to physically move around the structure to see the other side. I have never seen a display method like this before, and felt that it was an effective way to display the images with some quotes from what people had said alongside.

This project prompted me to think about my project and the work that I am doing within that. It encouraged me to think about potential exhibiting methods and how I could use text alongside my images, both on the wall and within my book. I feel that creating these images within my final year has given me a space to express my feelings and work through my grief.
